Saturday in Design

Collaborating with Enoki, 1000 Chairs, A&B, Archilux, Gareth Brown and Anouk a Spanish Fiesta theme of the day influenced the green installations created by WAX Design. Working with our sponsors, Bennetts Magill Pottery and Heyne’s Nursery, terracotta pots and plants were used to create our temporary tiered green wall as the feature back drop to the central show room.
Bike racks recently designed by WAX assisted with a sense of arrival out on the street and turf donated by Brooks Turf and laid with the help of Summit Landscape created a ‘party garden’ in the rear car park. The day was great fun, with paella, sangria, DJ James Paris and sunshine to create a lazy afternoon siesta vibe.

Cottage Character

WAX features in Sanctuary Magazine for a sustainable garden design which responds to the architecture of the client’s original 1880s cottage and the new extension by Troppo Architects. The use of recycled and local sourced natural materials throughout the garden, left to weather, share a similar language to the architecture creating a unity between the indoors and outdoors. The lawn is watered with rainwater along with the mix of drought tolerant natives and the productive garden. Several trees are located to provide shading to the house in summer.

Matt Returns from his Fellowship

Matt Baida has recently returned from his Churchill Fellowship motivated to help design professions make headway into the world of mine reclamation.  His journey saw him visit Germany, New York, the UK and South Africa where he looked at unearth the stories of mine reclamation in order to gain broader understanding of what is possible.

As his travels progressed, he realised the importance of educating the mining industry in the value of Landscape Architecture as a way of ensuring that the design profession is considered as an ally of the mining industry.  If you have ever heard an engineer try to describe what a landscape architect does, you will understand why this remains a challenge.

Matt has gained a great deal of knowledge on the ideas and implementation of social and creative considerations for post-mined landscapes.  Such ideas and outcomes are now reshaping the future for many communities well beyond the operating life of the mines.  Matt is convinced that while these concepts are not new, their application in Australia remains limited and is often ignored.  He now believes the challenge is replicating and delivering community driven social reclamation throughout the Australian mining industry.

He would like to thank the Winston Churchill Trust for the unbelievable opportunity and WAX Design supporting his endeavours. But most of all a special thanks must go to all the great people he met along the way for the hospitality and kindness they showed.  A copy of his Fellowship Report will be posted on the Trust’s website in the New Year.

WAX recognised for outstanding planning ideas

WAX is delighted to have been awarded a Commendation, in the ‘Best Planning Ideas Award – Small Projects’, last Friday night at the Planning Institute of Australia’s Awards of Excellence.  Together with recognised industry leaders, URPS and InfraPlan, as well as terrific support from the District Council of the Copper Coast, Kadina Chamber of Commerce and the local community the multi-discipline project team delivered an ambitious study recommending a capital works program, which reflects the long-term place making vision for the town centre.

The award recognises outstanding planning ideas and as noted by PIA (SA Division),

This project is a noteworthy response to the opportunities and challenges of rapid ‘sea change’ population growth, seasonal population fluctuations and an ageing population, and provides a model place making framework for other country towns responding to growth and change.

WAX continues its relationship with the Council and is looking forward to seeing the studies ideas and projects hit the ground.
