Port Augusta Common Ground UDIA Award of Excellence

WAX Design collaborated with Energy Architecture on the Port Augusta Common Ground project which has won the 2013 UDIA Award for Excellence Affordable Development at last week’s UDIA awards. WAX responded to the surrounding landscape of Pt Augusta as a driving influence for the design, with organic path networks and curved garden beds imitating the clusters of salt bush and spinifex which contrasts with the red earth that meanders its way through the vegetation.

A robust, socially and environmentally considerate landscape offers individuals private refuge, common areas for congregation and social interaction. Combining opportunities for education through the productive garden, bush foods and fruit trees as well as the use of indigenous vegetation.

Constructive Collaboration

Construction is almost completed for a sensory playspace that WAX Design has designed for the Suneden Special School. Funded by grants and donations, this low budget project aims to create an outdoor sensory space for students with disabilities. The unique and entertaining design uses large sections of concrete pipes to create outdoor sensory rooms incorporating varying tactile, interactive, explorative and sensory methods to improve student’s body awareness, problem solving, creativity and enhance overall learning abilities. WAX would like to say a big thankyou to all the volunteers and Summit Landscape for their hard work in making this come to life.
If you wish to make a donation to Suneden Special School please visit the link below.

Aldgate under construction

In the picturesque setting of Aldgate, WAX has under construction of a landscape sympathetic to the surrounding European traditions whilst celebrating the beauty of the local native species. Complimenting and responding to the built form, WAX have worked in close collaboration with Wood Marsh Architects and the client in designing a simple and understated landscape with a sculptural presence.

Rolling turf mounds will provide a breathing space around the home with sweeps of native grasses transitioning the manicured into the surrounding landscape. Structured interventions into the wider surrounds include a tennis court and a pool, to provide the family an opportunity for recreation and relaxation, along with a vegetable garden, chicken coop and orchard to create a productive garden.

COFFEE + INK

During the month of August Graduate Landscape Architect Isy James from WAX Design and Jesse Jai Zilm from JPE Design Studio created an exhibition entitled COFFEE + INK as part of SALA Festival 2013. Exhibiting art works that focus on their adventures and observations while sitting in obscure delicatessens + coffee shops in South East Asia.
