Henley Square Design Competition
WAX was recently involved in the Henley Square Urban Design Competition. Our response was to evoke a South Australian icon, the striped beach tent which remains an essential compliment to a day at the beach. The canvas tent is a recognisable artefact of our local culture with its collection of poles, pegs, and ropes that can be arranged to become a shelter, a destination, a place made.
Our design ‘CANVAS’ used the shade structure, a temporary, almost ephemeral object that delivered a series of unique urban design responses for this important South Australian beach destination.

WAX Picks Up National Planning Award.
WAX Design is delighted to receive a National
Planning Award of Excellence and would like to thank and congratulate the
project team of Suter Planners and URPS, as well as the support of District
Council of Streaky Bay, the local community, DPTI, DEWNR and Office of Sport
and Recreation. A commendation for ‘Best
Planning Ideas Small Project Award’ was received from the Planning Institute of Australia for
the Streaky Bay District Management Plan.
“The
Management Plan, founded on an agreed strategic vision, represents a collaborative
approach to the development and management of recreation, natural and urban
realms. It involves the integration of a range of ideas and opportunities complemented
by community engagement, which showcases good planning practice. The result is
a concise framework from which to implement the Plan.”
Well done to the Streaky Bay Council, Community
and project team for the great outcome!

'RANDOM' art project
The City of Holdfast Bay in association with WAX Design recently embarked on an exciting new public arts programme for Jetty Road Glenelg and Brighton which invited 10 artists to create random acts of art within the streets. Over four days, artists such as James Dodd, Anton Hart, Helen Nieuwendijk, Craige Andrae, Leith Elder and Violet Cooper created strange and beguiling works of art. The result was over fifty creative, witty and thought inducing interventions… random acts of art that have populated Jetty Road Glenelg and Jetty Road Brighton. The success of Random has stemmed from the freedom it has provided artists to explore creative responses and the way the art works have engaged the public. Random has, in effect, transformed Jetty Road Glenelg and Brighton into outdoor galleries, curated urban spaces in which to interact and enjoy public art.
The
inaugural Random public art event has created a new cultural animation for the
Jetty Roads, acts of art that promote temporary adjustments of the
everyday. The result is more smiles; increased chatter and sense of
discover in the streets – anticipation about what happens next......more Random
acts to follow. For a full list of the Random acts of art visit http://www.holdfast.sa.gov.au/page.aspx?u=1685

Mitcham Residence Garden Design
A series of locally hand crafted sandstone walls travel down the site, interspersed with an inlaid pebble pathway and surrounding linear bands of mass plantings are overlaid with a grid of deciduous trees. The pathway leads you to a paved entertaining platform at the lower end of the garden, which can be observed from the counter levered swimming pool that sits above.
A corten and stainless sculpture can be viewed from all aspects of the garden, including pool and acts a focal point and linking element to the different areas of the garden.
A productive area of raised garden beds is adjacent the family lawn area and surrounded fruiting trees which screen the boundary.
